Geely’s New EV Battery Charges From 10% to 70% in Just 4.5 Minutes

Chinese automakers are competing to make electric vehicle charging faster, and Geely Automobile has made its latest move with a battery capable of charging at up to 2.2 megawatts.

China is making the United States look increasingly behind the times in electric vehicles. Part of that gap comes from the close integration of connected services and cars as part of their owners’ digital lives, including additional infotainment screens and AI personal assistants. Chinese automakers also appear to be adopting the rapid update cycles associated with Android smartphones rather than the slower pace traditionally used by car companies.

Other advances may be even more appealing to drivers. Despite the efficiency, instant torque, lower noise and vibration, and greater reliability of electric vehicles compared with internal combustion engine cars, EVs have traditionally taken longer to charge than gasoline-powered vehicles take to refuel.

Geely’s latest battery technology could narrow that gap significantly.

Geely says its new battery can charge from 10% to 70% in just 4.5 minutes. A charge from 10% to 98% takes 8 minutes and 40 seconds.

The battery uses AI-powered predictive thermal management during charging. According to Geely, the pack maintains an average temperature of 55 degrees Celsius and reaches a peak temperature of 65 degrees Celsius.

AI system designed to extend battery life

Rapid charging can raise concerns about long-term battery health, particularly when high charging power is used repeatedly. Geely says its AI-controlled system applies tiny pulses of current to “reactivate the lithium ions that accumulate on the negative electrode during repeated rapid charges.”

The company claims this approach extends battery life by 20 percent.

Geely has tested the battery pack in both the Zeekr 001 and Lynk and Co 10. The same technology could potentially appear in Volvo or Lotus vehicles in the future.
