Your eyes are not deceiving you – this unusual sculpture known as Teeth is in motion. In fact, it’s a robot that moves on its own.

The device, dubbed the Metamachine with Legs, is constructed from spherical modules. Each module houses a motor, battery, computer, and a pair of arms.

These modules can roll, rotate, and jump independently. However, when combined, they can seamlessly return to their original stance when walking, running, or after a fall.

Remarkably, the robot can discover new ways to move, even if it loses limbs. Researchers tested this adaptability by cutting off a limb, showcasing the resilience of the machine.

AI-designed machines can move, recover from damage, and alter their shapes.

“Even after sustaining significant damage that would be detrimental to other robots, they can easily recover,” state the researchers behind this innovative machine. Fans of a certain science fiction franchise may wonder, “It will never stop.”

Aside from that, this legged metamachine is the brainchild of a team of engineers at Northwestern University in Chicago, who employed AI algorithms to create a robot capable of efficient and versatile movement.

“This exemplifies survival of the fittest, accelerated and realized through computational advancements,” says Sam Kriegman, the project leader. Let’s hope this algorithm isn’t called Skynet!
