On August 24, NASA engineers at Kennedy Space Center in Florida began installing four RS-25 engines on the core stage of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. The engines will power the Artemis III mission, which is scheduled to carry astronauts into low Earth orbit in 2027.
Each RS-25 engine features a unique serial number and a detailed record of previous spaceflight missions. The four engines selected for Artemis III—E2054, E2057, E2048, and E2052—previously powered NASA Space Shuttle flights. RS-25 engine E2048 helped launch astronaut Randy Bresnik’s early missions aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis during STS-129. The engine also supported Space Shuttle Discovery’s STS-95 mission in 1998, which returned 77-year-old space pioneer and U.S. Senator John Glenn to orbit, making him the oldest person to travel into space at the time.
