ChatGPT Ads Are Expanding: OpenAI to Test Visual Ads During Image Generation
OpenAI is expanding advertising on ChatGPT. The first new format will display visual ads while users generate images in ChatGPT.
OpenAI said it will begin testing the new ad format with its first group of advertisers in the United States later this month.
According to the company, the ads can use images to showcase product inspiration, explain how to use a product and highlight experiences related to a service. The format gives advertisers a more visual way to promote products and services inside ChatGPT.
“We will first test this new ad format during image generation in ChatGPT. Ads will be clearly labeled and remain separate from the images being created,” OpenAI said.
OpenAI also reiterated that advertisements will not influence ChatGPT’s responses.

ChatGPT is now used by 1.2 billion people each week, according to OpenAI. Advertising provides another way for the company to generate revenue from users who do not pay for a subscription.
OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT ad measurement tools
Alongside the new visual ad format, OpenAI is introducing more tools to help advertisers measure whether ChatGPT ads lead to purchases and other conversions.
For conversion data, OpenAI integrates with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp. Its attribution partners currently include AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale, Kochava and several others.
OpenAI also works with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science on brand suitability. This is particularly important for ChatGPT because advertisements appear alongside conversations rather than on traditional web pages.
The company says its safeguards are designed to prevent ads from appearing in emotionally vulnerable, sensitive or inappropriate conversations.
OpenAI also said that its independent partners do not have access to users’ private conversations when evaluating whether its ad safety measures are working as intended.
ChatGPT visual ad test will initially be limited to the U.S.
For now, OpenAI’s visual ad experiment is limited to the United States. However, the test signals that advertising could become a larger part of ChatGPT as the company looks to monetize its 1.2 billion weekly users.
