After decades of limited progress, private investment is accelerating the race to develop commercial nuclear fusion and deliver a virtually limitless source of clean electricity.

After decades of slow progress in government and academic research, nuclear fusion is attracting unprecedented commercial interest. According to the Fusion Industry Association, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., 46 companies worldwide are pursuing fusion energy for commercial power generation. Other businesses are developing fusion technology for specialized applications, including medical isotope production, materials research and propulsion systems for warships and spacecraft.
As of August 1, companies focused on fusion power generation had raised a combined US$14.6 billion to help make commercial nuclear fusion a reality. Venture capital firms provide much of this funding, while startups are also receiving support from private investors, utility companies, government subsidies and technology companies building energy-intensive data centers.
Many fusion companies have now separated from the research institutions where the technology was developed. Some do not license intellectual property from or collaborate with those institutions. Most companies aim to demonstrate commercial fusion and begin supplying electricity to the power grid by the early to mid-2030s. However, academic scientists caution that these timelines may be overly ambitious, highlighting the significant technical and engineering challenges that remain before fusion power can become a reliable source of clean energy.
