A 68-year-old British man has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison for operating an illegal IPTV streaming service that generated £980,812 (approximately $1.3 million) over three years.
An investigation by the City of London Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) found that Milan Ibrahim was running what authorities described as a sophisticated pirate IPTV operation serving customers in the UK and overseas.
According to PIPCU, Ibrahim distributed unauthorized broadcasts from major rights holders, including the BBC, ITV, Sky, the Premier League, and the British Film Institute.
Police seized and shut down all 80 servers identified during the investigation, disrupting the illegal IPTV streams delivered to the service’s customers.
“An investigation revealed that the business operated from premises in Chorley with 80 servers and generated £980,812 over three years,” the City of London Police said.
“During the enforcement operation, all 80 servers were seized and shut down, significantly disrupting the operation’s ability to provide illegal streaming services.”
The seized servers could help authorities identify customers who paid for or used the illegal IPTV service. Those individuals may face fines or other legal consequences for supporting copyright infringement and piracy.
Police said Ibrahim will also face proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act, which are intended to recover money generated through the illegal streaming operation.
Premier League enforcement director Stephen Selgaard described the action as “significant,” calling the seized IPTV service “one of the UK’s most prominent and long-standing suppliers of pirate services.”
UK government records show that Ibrahim was previously a director of CTU Systems, a company that has since been dissolved. Although commercial IPTV software was associated with the company, authorities have not identified CTU Systems as being connected to the illegal streaming services involved in this case.
