One of the artificial intelligence industry’s boldest predictions is that AI systems will soon be able to improve themselves with little human oversight. However, new research suggests that this milestone may still be some way off.
Researchers found that AI agents remain unable to conduct open-ended AI research—investigations without clearly defined answers that require the judgment, creativity, and insight needed to make meaningful progress.
The key question is how important open-ended research will be to recursive self-improvement. Researchers are also examining whether AI systems can advance by focusing on narrower tasks instead of independently pursuing broad research goals.

Jacob Hanna’s remarkable fetal model
Jacob Hanna, a Palestinian stem cell scientist, knew what to expect when he was stopped while entering the United States last May. The agent asked whether he had anything to declare and whether he was carrying biological samples. This time, however, the questions focused on a more specific subject: embryos.
Hanna did not have a specimen. Even if he had, though, it would have been surprisingly difficult to describe. That is because his work focuses on creating artificial embryo models—structures that resemble real embryos but are made without sperm, eggs, or fertilization.
These models offer an unprecedented view of the earliest stages of human development and could lead to new methods for producing cells for transplant medicine. But as the models become increasingly realistic, they are also raising difficult ethical questions about how far this research should go.
