Trekkers Cross Dozens of Landslides After Returning From Manang
Australian trekker Andrew Graham and his guide, Prem KC, crossed more than 15 landslides after deciding to return from Manang village. Graham said some of the landslides were extremely dangerous and warned that the residual risk was increasing.
Travellers Stranded Near Cham
Graham said they became stranded after reaching Cham, where people had been evacuated because of the risk of further landslides. The pair had to spend the night in the jungle.
Landslide Creates Temporary Lake in Chame
A massive landslide partially blocked the river flowing through Chame, creating a temporary lake that flooded homes and important bridges.
Local residents told the BBC that authorities had been using excavators for three days to release the water, but had made little progress.
Trekking Group Crosses 28 Landslides
Trekking guide Tse Ling Doma said she and her group had to cross 28 landslides. She said the mental strain was more difficult than the physical challenge because memories of last month’s disaster were still fresh.
“Even if it was thundering, we had to run outside to see if anything was coming.”
Visitors Considered Luckier Than Local Residents
Doma’s client, Norwegian trekker Ellen Wahlström, said local residents faced the risk of losing their homes and land, while visitors were comparatively lucky.
Wahlström added that authorities were clearing many of the landslides “incredibly quickly.”
