The return of man to the moon is on the horizon, so we need to think about how the people who land on the surface of the Earth’s satellite again will move there efficiently.
To achieve a sustainable human presence on the Moon, transportation on the lunar surface will be a key factor. In this context, Toyota presents an innovative concept known as the “Baby Lunar Cruiser”. Although this concept is currently only at the level of an idea, this electric lunar SUV represents a futuristic vision of upcoming lunar vehicles.
Unlike its predecessors, the Toyota concept looks a lot like a conventional, earthly car. It features a panoramic view, an augmented reality control panel display, and an array of cameras and sensors that can detect dangerous lunar terrain, including potential crater-sized holes. Furthermore, airless tires eliminate the risk of punctures, which is essential in the harsh lunar environment.
Interesting way of driving
What sets the Toyota concept apart is the fact that it carries the Toyota logo and has electric motors in the wheels. An exciting detail on it is the control method, because instead of a traditional steering wheel, it is controlled using a joystick.
Inspired by Toyota’s original FJ40 Land Cruiser, the lunar concept mini is a replica of the design of the real Lunar Cruiser, a six-wheeled self-driving rover developed in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The Lunar Cruiser should reach the Moon in 2029, and its autonomy of movement will be 10,000 kilometers through the lunar landscape. It accommodates two passengers for a period of up to 14 days, offering them living and working space during their journey across the surface of the Moon. The vehicle will be powered by Toyota’s fuel cell technology.
