Throughout his school holidays and later during a 30-year career with Barclays, he dedicated his time to volunteering in a variety of roles with the RSPB, supporting wildlife conservation and protecting nature.
He said: “I probably shouldn’t admit this, because people often volunteer to do something positive or give something back. But, initially, volunteering with the RSPB gave me the opportunity to get closer to birds and nature.
“Spending time with wildlife, observing and learning about birds, mammals and insects, has always been very beneficial for my mental wellbeing.”
RSPB Volunteering Development Officer Tim Hughes said: “Few people can match Nigel’s long-term commitment to RSPB volunteering, the wide-ranging impact of his work and the lasting legacy he has created for wildlife conservation.”
