Twitch now lets users opt out of Amazon AI training, allowing creators to prevent Amazon from using content on their channels to develop generative artificial intelligence models. The update comes more than two years after Amazon executives acknowledged that Twitch content could be used to train the company’s AI systems.
In an updated Twitch support page, the company confirms that users must manually opt out if they do not want their channel content—including streams, VODs, clips, stream chat, photos, and text—to be used for future training of Amazon models designed to generate or synthesize text, audio, images, or video.
To disable the use of Twitch content for Amazon’s generative AI training, users should visit the following settings page: www.twitch.tv/settings/security.
The updated Twitch support page states:
Allowing training means your content may be used to improve future Gen AI models. By allowing your content to be used to train Gen AI content models, audio can help improve the models that create speech-to-text, which not only helps improve captions on Twitch, but also across Amazon.
Twitch users are automatically opted in to AI training, and the policy appears to have been in place for at least several years. During a 2024 press event, The Information reported that Amazon could use Twitch content to train its AI models.
When asked whether Twitch had a role in training Amazon’s AI systems, Mike Minton, Twitch’s chief monetization officer at the time, replied, “Sure.” He added that the practice would need to comply with user trust requirements and privacy regulations that vary around the world, but said Twitch “of course” had a role to play.
