Its pocketed coils and microcoils promote airflow and help limit heat buildup. How does WIRED test cooling mattresses?
We test each mattress for at least one week and often much longer. Testing includes sleeping on different sheets and bedding throughout various seasons, assessing edge support, bounce, motion isolation, comfort, airflow, and heat retention. Because the tester is naturally a warm sleeper, nighttime temperature regulation is a major part of the evaluation.
What should you look for in a cooling mattress?
When shopping for a cooling mattress, consider these key features:
- Materials: Hybrid mattresses often sleep cooler than all-foam designs because their coil systems allow air to circulate. Gel- or copper-infused foams may also help manage heat.
- Breathable cover: Look for moisture-wicking fabrics and phase-change materials. Bamboo, Tencel Lyocell, synthetic fibers, and perforated covers can improve airflow and temperature regulation.
- Airflow: A mattress with strong internal ventilation can move heat away from the sleeper. Pocketed coils are particularly helpful for maintaining airflow.
- Firmness: Softer mattresses allow the body to sink deeper into the surface, which can trap warmth. A firmer mattress may provide more airflow around the body, although firmness is ultimately a personal preference.
