Modders are beginning to explore how root access could unlock previously unavailable features on Meta’s Quest VR headsets. One project focuses on enabling a 90Hz refresh rate, which was initially limited to 72Hz in the operating system for performance reasons. John Carmack discussed the feature in 2019. Developers are also working on making additional VR controllers compatible with the original Oculus Quest.
In 2021, Meta’s then-CTO John Carmack released an official “full root access” update for the Oculus Go, the wireless predecessor to the Quest. At the time, Carmack said he hoped the update would help tinkerers keep the hardware useful long after official support ended. The goal was to make the headset available for more than its original, commercially packaged software and allow owners to install updates even after over-the-air update servers had been shut down.
QuestStack, created by starseed12345, is a GitHub project exploring a similar exploit that could potentially provide root access on Oculus Quest 2 headsets running older firmware versions. However, the project remains experimental, and its developers warn that the risk of permanently bricking a headset currently outweighs the benefits of unlocking the bootloader.
