English dominates the internet, providing vast amounts of online data for training artificial intelligence (AI) systems. But what about people who speak languages that are rarely represented online? This program explores an innovative project helping AI understand and support more of the world’s languages, including those with limited digital resources.
This week, we also examine technology regulation in Europe and the United States. Although rules for the tech industry may seem as unappealing as a trip to the dentist, effective regulation is essential. Different legal approaches on both sides of the Atlantic raise important questions about who controls technology standards and how these decisions could affect people worldwide.
In addition, technology designed for older adults is becoming more advanced and widespread. We review several products and services aimed at seniors and consider how practical, accessible and useful they really are.
