Towering cumulonimbus clouds formed over southern England and northern Europe in late June as the region experienced another intense summer heatwave. With the holiday season underway, thousands of passengers were traveling through London Heathrow and Gatwick airports. The combination of peak-season demand and severe weather created the conditions for major flight disruption.
As thunderstorms intensified, congested airspace made it difficult for air traffic controllers to safely route aircraft around the storms. Around 900 flights arriving at and departing from Heathrow and Gatwick were delayed, with some passengers facing waits of up to 11 hours. Dozens of additional flights were canceled, while travelers flying to London encountered long delays and uncertainty at airports across Europe.
Although cooler weather in the UK may soon make the incident feel like a distant memory, aviation experts say the disruption should serve as a warning. Extreme weather is becoming an increasing challenge for airlines, airports and passengers.
The timing of the storm was especially damaging because it coincided with one of the busiest travel periods of the year. However, experts warn that climate change could make similar events more frequent. Unstable weather systems, stronger heatwaves and severe thunderstorms may increase the risk of flight delays, cancellations and rising costs across the aviation industry.
Tim Atkinson, an aviation risk consultant and former pilot, said the heavily congested airspace over Britain and northern Europe makes the region particularly vulnerable to weather-related disruption.
He warned that a powerful storm could potentially affect all of London’s major airports at the same time, creating widespread problems both in the skies and on the ground.
“What we’re seeing now is very rapid climate change,” he says.
“We are moving from a situation where the aviation system can respond to weather events that would once have devastated an airport to one where all of London’s airports could be forced out of real-time operations quickly, with little warning or predictability.”
In that scenario, the passenger disruption caused by the June thunderstorms could seem relatively minor. More severe and widespread weather-related aviation failures could also create serious safety risks. But how likely is such an event to become?
