Windows 11 26H2 Update Is Rolling Out—Here’s What Changes
Microsoft has started rolling out the Windows 11 2026 Update, also known as version 26H2. Although it is the major annual feature update for this year, most users may not notice much of a difference after installing it.
That is because Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 are based on the same servicing branch. Microsoft also delivers many new Windows features gradually through monthly updates instead of holding them for a single large annual upgrade.
“Windows 11 version 26H2 uses the same shared services model as recent releases delivered in the second half of each calendar year. Supported devices will receive this feature update as a small enablement package rather than a complete OS replacement,” Microsoft explained.
If you are already running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, the 26H2 update should install much like a regular monthly cumulative update. It will not require the lengthy replacement process associated with some previous Windows feature updates.
“If your organization is already using Windows 11 version 24H2 or 25H2, updating to 26H2 is similar to a regular monthly update in most environments,” Microsoft said.
Microsoft says this is possible because several Windows 11 versions share a common servicing branch, the same source code base, security and quality updates, and compatibility validation. The main difference between versions is which features are enabled.
Windows 11 26H2 does not introduce a completely new feature set
If you regularly install Windows 11 updates, many of the changes associated with 26H2 may already be familiar. Microsoft now delivers features and improvements continuously rather than saving them for major annual releases.
“This also means we share the same new features and enhancements delivered through our continuous innovation efforts. As a result, many of the features and improvements available in Windows 11 version 26H2 may already be familiar to you, as they are phased in through monthly updates.”
For commercial PCs, Windows 11 26H2 enables several features that were not previously turned on by default. These include:
- Windows settings backup
- App-specific taskbar actions
- Improvements to File Explorer
Windows 11 26H1 PCs cannot upgrade directly to 26H2
There is one important limitation: PCs running Windows 11 26H1 cannot migrate directly to Windows 11 26H2 because 26H1 uses a different Windows core.
“Devices running Windows 11 version 26H1 will not be able to update to version 26H2. They will instead have a path to update to a future Windows release,” Microsoft confirmed.
Windows 11 26H2 resets the support lifecycle
Installing Windows 11 26H2 also resets the Windows support lifecycle. Home and Pro editions receive 24 months of support, while Enterprise and Education editions receive 36 months.
For users running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, the 26H2 update is primarily a transition to the latest supported Windows 11 version—not a completely different Windows experience.
