Fi Mini vs. Tractive: Which Smart Cat Tracker Has Better Battery Life and Location Features?
Both the Fi Mini and Tractive rely on GPS for location tracking. If the satellite signal is weak or inconsistent—a common issue in rural areas and environments with dense vegetation—you may not see your cat’s exact location. Some reviewers on Reddit and Amazon also report that Tractive’s location tracking is less accurate in areas with heavy vegetation.
GPS safe zones and location alerts
When setting up each tracker’s companion app, you can designate mapped areas as safe or danger zones. The app then alerts you when your pet enters or leaves one of those zones.
Basil is an indoor cat, but I had to extend the safe zones beyond my apartment when testing all three trackers. My apartment was too small to create a virtual fence around him. As a result, I would not receive an alert if Basil went outside or stayed nearby.
Tractive activity and sleep tracking
The Tractive app lets you create a cat profile and set daily activity goals based on statistics from cats of a similar age and weight. It assigned Basil a daily activity target of 120 to 230 minutes and later reported that he was more active than 70 percent of cats of his breed. That gave me some reassurance that he was getting enough movement in my small apartment.
At the end of each day and week, the app provides activity averages and daily calorie estimates. These estimates are based on factors such as your pet’s type, weight, and size, and are compared with the pet’s activity level.
Tractive’s sleep-tracking feature monitors sleep and categorizes it as nighttime sleep, daytime sleep, or calm. It estimates sleep length and cycle phase from movement patterns and time of day, so the data is more general than precise. Overall, I found Tractive’s activity and sleep information more useful and easier to analyze than Fi’s.
Best battery life, charging, and compact design
Testing these trackers highlighted the importance of basic features such as battery life and the ability to remove the tracker from the collar easily for charging. This is where the Fi Mini excels.

Fi Mini vs. Tractive battery life
The Fi Mini took about two hours to reach a full charge and lasted about two weeks during my testing. Fi claims a battery life of four weeks, but two weeks was still considerably longer than the Tractive, which lasted about five days on a full charge.
I have not tested the longer claim, but Fi says the tracker can last six to eight weeks with the Fi Base add-on.
What does the Fi Base do?
The Fi Base can extend battery life by acting as a connection source when your pet is at home. Its Wi-Fi connectivity is also intended to help improve location accuracy.
Fi users with an Apple Watch can add the Fi app to the watch to monitor their pet’s location and activity and activate “lost mode” without using a phone. This could be helpful if your cat runs away while your phone is unavailable.
Fi Mini or Tractive: Which cat tracker is better?
The Fi Mini performed better for battery life, charging convenience, and compact design in my testing. Tractive provided more useful and easier-to-analyze activity and sleep data. However, both trackers depend on GPS and connected devices, so location accuracy can vary with signal strength, vegetation, and whether your phone is nearby.
