Mac Mini vs. Mac Studio vs. iMac: Which Mac Desktop Should You Buy?
MacBook took the spotlight In recent years, most of the attention has shifted away from the Mac desktop. As mobile performance and battery life have improved significantly, there is less reason to buy an office-bound desktop.
But the Mac desktop is making a comeback. The Mac Mini and Mac Studio have finally been updated with the latest chips and a focus on running local AI. So, which one should you buy—and where does the iMac fit in today? I have been testing Macs for over a decade, including all of these Mac desktops, and can recommend the right option for your needs.

The Best Mac Desktop for Most People: Mac Mini
Apple’s popular mini PC has been upgraded with the M6 chip, and the update is significant in several ways. These compact computers were sold out for months before the refresh, but the growing interest in local AI has helped drive demand.
The Mac Mini is no longer the ultra-cheap mini PC it once was. It costs $300 more than before, but the base model offers better specifications and a stronger focus on running local AI. If you want an especially affordable small desktop for occasional use, a Windows machine is the better choice.
The good news is that the Mac Mini remains compelling across its available configurations. There are two new models: one powered by the M6 chip and another powered by the M5 Pro. The M6 version is the model most people should buy, particularly if they want a fast and reliable Mac desktop.
Why the M6 Mac Mini Is the Best Choice for Most Users
The M6 chip is especially fast in GPU performance, and Apple continues to make progress in this area. Budding video editors and designers will find enough performance in the base configuration for creative applications.
Unfortunately, the Mac Mini is only a few hundred dollars cheaper than a similarly configured MacBook Air, making the laptop’s versatility a difficult factor to overlook. Even so, this is the first time the Mac Mini’s form factor feels like a better choice than a laptop for some users.
AI enthusiasts may be excited by the possibility of using an always-on agent AI box that sits on a desk and can be controlled remotely from a MacBook or iPhone. That is exactly what the Mac Mini can do, although you should be sure to upgrade its memory.
Given industry-wide memory prices, there are not many comparable options on Windows or Linux that offer this level of performance and RAM. For users who want a compact Mac desktop for local AI, creative work, or reliable everyday performance, the M6 Mac Mini is the strongest all-around choice.
Who Should Buy the M5 Pro Mac Mini?
I have not tested the M5 Pro model yet, but its main advantage is enhanced graphics performance. Despite the improvements in the M6 chip, the M5 Pro can be configured with up to 20 GPU cores, which can be especially useful for gaming, 3D modeling, and video rendering.
As the name suggests, the M5 Pro is intended for professionals who spend much of their time in applications such as Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve. If you are focused on hobbies or smaller creative projects, the M6 Mac Mini should be enough.
