Kubuntu Focus Zr Gen 1 Review: A Powerful Linux Laptop for Serious Work

The Kubuntu Focus Zr Gen 1 is a powerful Linux laptop designed for demanding workloads rather than portability. It delivers strong performance for machine learning, local large language models, big-data processing and high-end video editing, while offering an extensive selection of ports and upgrade options.

Battery Life, Keyboard and Trackpad

Battery life is good for a laptop of this size, lasting most of the day in our tests. The keyboard is comfortable and easy to type on. The oversized trackpad can occasionally get in the way, although it was not a major issue. Be careful where you place your palms, as you may accidentally right-click.

Extensive Port Selection, Including OcuLink

This Linux laptop has a generous selection of ports: two USB-C ports—one USB 4.0 and one USB 3.2 Gen 2—three USB-A ports, a microSD card reader, an Ethernet port, an HDMI port and an OcuLink port for connecting external graphics hardware through a dock or eGPU.

The ability to connect a graphics card when needed is particularly useful. My main complaint is that both USB-C ports are located on the same side of the laptop; placing them on opposite sides would make cable management easier.

A Strong Linux Desktop Experience

The custom apps that ship with System76 also deliver the “just works” stability needed for everyday use, without constantly reminding you that you are running Linux.

Performance for Machine Learning, LLMs and Video Editing

The Kubuntu Focus Zr Gen 1 is a powerful laptop, but it is not especially portable. It measures 15 inches by 12 inches, is more than an inch thick and weighs 8 pounds. For workloads that require serious computing power—such as running TensorFlow for machine learning, working with local LLMs, processing large datasets or editing high-end video—the Zr Gen 1 packs a punch.

Inside the Zr Gen 1 is a 24-core Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor, an RTX 5090 graphics card, 24 GB of GDDR7 RAM and two SSDs: one 1 TB drive and one 2 TB drive. The memory is expandable to 192 GB, while the laptop can support up to four drives, including one PCIe Gen 5×4 NVMe SSD.

The laptop includes both an integrated GPU and a discrete GPU. You can turn off the discrete graphics card to improve battery life. I spent about 90 percent of my time with the discrete GPU disabled and enabled it only when editing photos and videos.
