More than 500 tourists and other travelers are missing in Nepal, including 466 foreign nationals from 28 countries, according to Nepal police.
The Nepal Tourism Board has released a breakdown of the missing people by nationality. In its latest Thursday morning announcement, external, the board said 65 missing people were from the United States, 25 from Canada, 178 from India, 33 from the United Kingdom and 127 from Nepal.
United States: The US State Department did not release the number of Americans affected or provide additional details, citing privacy concerns.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the Canadian government is closely monitoring the situation in Nepal.
Carney urged Canadians living in the region to register with the Canadian Overseas Register. The free service enables the federal government to contact and assist Canadian citizens abroad during emergencies.
According to the Canadian Overseas Registration System, Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs said 820 Canadians are registered in Nepal, while five Canadians are registered in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.
Officials emphasized that the figures are estimates because registration is voluntary and may include people who have not yet traveled or finalized their travel plans.
“The department is aware of Canadians affected by the flooding,” Canada’s Department of International Affairs said in a statement to the BBC.
