Jaguar Type 01: 1,030-PS Electric Grand Tourer With 400 Miles of Range
Jaguar describes the Type 01 as “a bold grand tourer that, like the best Jaguars of the past, never goes unnoticed.” The production car certainly delivers on that promise. Its low roofline, short front end, extended rear overhang, long bonnet, and huge 23-inch wheels remain faithful to the prototype.
The rear-cab design conceals a 50/50 weight distribution. Despite its massive surfaces, the Type 01 is Jaguar’s most aerodynamic car ever, with a 0.23 Cd drag coefficient. Active aerodynamic features include adjustable vanes, a deployable spoiler, and other airflow-management technology.
A More Practical Take on the Prototype’s Design
The addition of rear doors makes the production model’s design more meaningful, moving the Type 01’s appearance away from Thunderbird territory and into more familiar Jaguar grand-tourer territory. The front end is also slightly softer than the extremely blunt nose of the prototype.
The rear is where the exterior design really shines. Full-width lights are embedded in horizontal strikethroughs and remain hidden until they are switched on, creating a distinctive lighting signature.
Jaguar Type 01 Performance and Powertrain
The Type 01 is Jaguar’s most powerful road car, producing up to 1,030 Pferdestärke (PS) and 1,365 Newton meters of torque. It accelerates from a standstill to 102 mph in 3.2 seconds.
The car’s “Power in Reserve” tagline is supported by its ability to accelerate from 62 to 112 mph in an additional four seconds. During a drive, the Type 01 felt as though it never stopped accelerating, thanks to its tri-motor setup, which combines a 260-kilowatt (kW) front motor with twin 310kW rear motors.
Range, Charging and Dimensions
The Jaguar Type 01 measures 5,235 millimeters long and 1,403 millimeters high. All-wheel steering helps it feel considerably smaller on the road than its dimensions suggest.
Its custom 850-volt Jaguar architecture and 118-kilowatt-hour usable battery are expected to provide up to 400 miles of EPA range, or 450 miles under the WLTP testing cycle. At sustained highway speeds, the car is expected to deliver up to 320 miles of range.
With 350kW fast DC charging, drivers can add up to 200 miles of range in 13 minutes. In short, the Type 01 is huge, fast, aerodynamic, powerful, and unmistakably unique.
Jaguar Type 01 Interior and Technology
Inside, a striking central spine runs the length of the cabin and creates distinct zones for each occupant. Brass-inspired finishes are designed to reinforce the car’s luxurious character.
A panoramic glass roof with adjustable virtual blinds brings additional light into the cabin. However, there is no conventional rear windshield. Instead, a digital “ClearSight” rearview display is integrated into the center of a full-width panoramic soundbar at the base of the windshield.
The display shows the view behind the car. Wisely, the rear-camera feed is positioned at the same height as the door mirrors, which should reduce the awkward focus adjustments often required by these systems.
