Man Jailed for Fake Lego Insurance Claims Named Among UK’s Most High-Profile Fraudsters
A fraudster jailed for making false home insurance claims for allegedly stolen Lego has been named among last year’s most high-profile insurance fraudsters.
Fraudster sentenced to 28 months for fabricated claims
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) said an investigation found that the claims were fabricated. The man was sentenced to 28 months in prison.
Other insurance fraud cases highlighted by the ABI included people staging car accidents with individuals they met online, as well as complex travel insurance scams involving multiple false identities and documents.
Insurance fraud claims reached £1.34bn in 2025
The average value of a fraudulent insurance claim reached £14,300 in 2025, the second-highest level on record, according to the ABI.
There were £1.34bn worth of fraudulent claims detected in 2025, a 14% increase from the £1.18bn recorded the previous year.
However, the number of detected fraudulent claims fell slightly to 93,900, down 2.7% compared with 2024.
ABI warns fraudsters are targeting higher payouts
Mark Allen, head of fraud and financial crime at the ABI, said: “While insurance fraud detection rates fell slightly last year, our data shows fraudsters are targeting much higher payouts.
“As emerging technologies such as AI become more widely available, fraudsters will continue to seek new ways to exploit them.”
Insurance fraud could be “only the tip of the iceberg”
Detective Inspector Simon Crust, head of the London Police Insurance Fraud Enforcement Unit (IFED), said: “Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime and those who commit it are increasing insurance premiums for honest customers.”
He added that the 250 cases detected by the ABI each day last year were “unfortunately likely only the tip of the iceberg”.
