Range Rover Sport Electric Revealed With 374-Mile Range and 4.3-Second Acceleration
The all-electric Range Rover Sport combines a 550-PS powertrain, 800-volt charging and a lower price than the full-size Range Rover Electric.
Sandwiched between the long-awaited full-fat Range Rover Electric going on sale in early September and the final unveiling of the long-awaited Jaguar Type 01 in New York City next week, JLR’s Range Rover Sport Electric arrives with less fanfare—but it could be just as important to the automaker.
The all-electric Range Rover Sport may be especially significant because the model sells close to, or even slightly more than, the flagship Range Rover, partly because of its lower price. JLR is in trouble, with the company announcing earlier this month that it would cut 4,000 jobs over the next two years.
Range Rover Sport Electric performance
JLR says the performance SUV has the stiffest body of any Range Rover Sport model, helped by the battery’s placement, as well as the lowest center of gravity. It also has a faster torque response than the Range Rover Electric, making it 50% faster.
The Range Rover Sport Electric uses the same powertrain as the larger Range Rover, but with different tuning and a lower price. Prices are listed from £109,810. Two 260-kilowatt motors deliver up to 550 PS and 850 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque—more than any Range Rover Sport to date.
With the EV’s Dynamic Launch mode activated, the electric SUV accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds.
Range and charging
Range Rover claims the Sport Electric will travel up to 374 miles on a single charge using its 118.5-kilowatt-hour battery. Under the WLTP standard, that should translate to approximately 320 miles under the EPA’s more rigorous testing.
The electric SUV features split charging technology and an 800-volt electrical architecture. Under ideal charging conditions, it can add 136 miles of range in 10 minutes and charge from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes.
