This year is turning out to be remarkable for British weather, setting new monthly temperature records for May and June, surpassing previous highs by over two degrees.
We are currently experiencing the third heatwave of 2026. Similarly, last year marked the third heatwave in 2025. Notably, in July 2025, several regions in the south faced four consecutive days where temperatures exceeded 30 degrees Celsius.
So far this July, parts of England and Wales have recorded 12 days with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, while heatwave conditions have been noted for 13 days.
Additionally, regions in Scotland and Northern Ireland are experiencing a heatwave this week, albeit with less intensity and shorter duration.
Comparisons are being drawn to the historic 1976 heatwave, known for its record-long duration. However, 2026 is witnessing higher extreme temperatures and an increased number of “hot days.”
In addition to the soaring temperatures, the significant dryness is striking. Some southern England areas, like Wisley in Surrey, have not seen any rain for 30 consecutive days.
Most regions in Wales and Northern Ireland are experiencing limited rainfall, while specific areas in western Scotland are receiving above-average rain. Fortunately, no part of the UK is facing drought conditions as severe as those following the 1976 heatwave.
Notably, in 2026, the frequency and intensity of the heatwaves have increased dramatically.
This year, the number of days exceeding 35 degrees has risen to six, and for the first time, temperatures of 35 degrees have been recorded for three consecutive months: May, June, and July.
