Major Sporting Events like the FIFA World Cup and global music tours hold immense cultural and economic significance. However, these high-profile events often come with substantial greenhouse gas emissions resulting from international travel, infrastructure development, and excessive consumption.
Recently, researchers from the University of Cambridge introduced a groundbreaking framework for evaluating mega-events based on their “climate viability,” as published in the journal Communication Sustainability. Their analysis focused on the 2026 FIFA World Cup and Coldplay’s 2024 European tour, weighing consumer welfare gains against emissions costs.
“Addressing climate strategies for mega-events like the World Cup requires more than just minimizing operational emissions; this merely constitutes a fraction of total emissions,” highlighted Professor Sean Larcombe from the University of Cambridge. Learn more about the report’s findings.
The expansion of the 2026 World Cup to 48 teams is predicted to result in a significant emissions increase of around 590,000 tons compared to the previous 32-team tournament, totaling approximately 4.23 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Notably, 82% of these emissions are attributed to fan travel, with international travel alone contributing about 3.07 million tons. This figure equates to Iceland’s total annual emissions, according to the research team.
Translating the climate change costs of these emissions to spectators indicates an average added expense of $114 per game ticket. In a similar analysis of Coldplay’s 2024 European tour, comprising 10 cities and 32 shows with 1.9 million tickets available, the climate change cost without mitigation is estimated at $11 per ticket. While the tour differs significantly from the World Cup in scale and travel distances, the research emphasizes the importance of identifying “key players” in emissions reduction.
To their credit, Coldplay is proactively reducing emissions linked to their shows. Initiatives include using mobile battery systems, solar power, and an energy-generating dance floor. Remarkably, approximately 98% of the emissions reduction from Coldplay’s tour is credited to fans voluntarily altering their travel habits. The band’s dedicated app fosters this change by providing fans with low-carbon transport options and discounts for eco-friendly travel.
As a result of these initiatives, Coldplay’s tour achieved a 48% reduction in emissions from fan travel. Overall, when combined with additional measures, the tour’s total emissions were reduced by 46% compared to typical tours, nearly cutting the carbon footprint in half.
The researchers propose a two-tiered economic framework to tackle climate impacts from mega-events. The first step is evaluating the economic benefits received by organizers against the financial costs of emissions, guiding decisions about downsizing, redesigning, or potentially canceling events if the costs exceed benefits.
Application of this framework to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and Coldplay’s 2024 European tour indicates that the economic advantages surpass climate costs in both instances. However, the researchers caution that this balance may shift for the World Cup if the social cost of carbon, or the damage incurred per ton of emissions, is high.
“Major entertainment events likely provide sufficient welfare value to compensate for their emissions costs,” stated Jackson Goldman, a co-author of the study. “Now, it’s essential for both organizers and fans to collaborate in taking responsibility for these emissions.”
The second aspect of the framework emphasizes integrating climate change damage costs into the total event expenses. The researchers advocate for holding organizers accountable for direct emissions from venues and stage setups, while fans and organizers should share responsibility for indirect emissions, such as travel to and from the event.
