A rare bird sighting in the UK has captured attention as a Night Heron has been photographed in Somerset, igniting optimism that ongoing freshwater habitat restoration efforts could create a safe haven for this species.
Night Herons are typically found across Africa, Asia, the Americas, and parts of Europe, but recent sightings have emerged at the National Trust’s Holnicote Estate near Minehead.
The newly established freshwater habitat not only offers shelter for Night Herons but also provides crucial support for other wildlife, including water voles, otters, pine martens, and even white-tailed eagles.
According to Ben Eardley, project manager at Somerset Coast and Countryside, “This wetland bird is seldom seen in the UK, making its appearance even more intriguing as we’ve successfully captured it on our cameras at the site.”
