In Odyssey, Homer presents the first concepts of autonomous ships that bear a striking resemblance to today’s artificial intelligence. The Phaeacian vessel, responsible for transporting Odysseus to Ithaca, is described as having an innate understanding of its destination, guided without a helmsman and in tune with the crew’s intentions.
This epic narrative recounts Odysseus’s tumultuous journey home after the Trojan War and serves as a cornerstone of literature, tracing its origins back to 1600 B.C.. Yet, Odyssey is more than a mere adventure; it unveils the science, medical practices, and technologies of the Homeric era.

Metallurgy and Trade
After centuries of oral storytelling, Odyssey was transcribed during the Iron Age around 800 B.C., reflecting a blend of metallurgical techniques ranging from iron to bronze. The text showcases insights into steel production, revealing its historical significance.
One notable scene describes Odysseus and his crew blinding a Cyclops with a heated stake, reminiscent of a blacksmith’s process of tempering steel. This suggests that the author may have had experience with steel tools, as proposed by Michael Wright, a former curator at the London Science Museum.
Recent archaeological discoveries at the Mycenaean Palace of Nestor near Pylos, Greece, have unearthed items that support Homer’s claims. Notably, a vessel composed of bronze, silver, and gold, along with an intricate representation of a ‘windowed’ ax dating back to 1450 B.C. This may explain Odysseus’s legendary challenge of shooting arrows into a row of twelve axes, as Sharon Stocker, an archaeologist from the University of Cincinnati, remarks, “The more we dig, the more we uncover.”
Odyssey also implies that long-distance trade routes flourished among late Bronze Age cultures—a fact only confirmed by archaeologists in the late 20th century with discoveries such as the Uluburun shipwreck in southern Turkey, filled with artifacts from diverse regions including Europe and Mesopotamia.
Brendan Foley, a naval archaeologist from Lund University in Sweden, states that these findings indicate ancient eastern Mediterranean civilizations sailed across the Mediterranean long before previously believed.
The shipwreck was a relatively small cargo vessel, roughly 15 meters long, while Odysseus’s ship could accommodate 50 rowers, making it significantly longer and designed for speed.

Botany and Poisons
Odyssey makes references to various plants linked to drugs, poisons, and antidotes. Helen of Troy employs a substance called Nepenthes to alleviate suffering, while Circe administers a potion to Odysseus’s men, transforming them into swine.
Researchers are investigating the real-world origins of Nepenthes, which may include henbane and mandrake—plants known for their nerve-blocking compounds used in ancient analgesics, according to Rafael Molina Venegas, a botanist at the Biological Institute of Doñana in Seville, Spain.
In the epic, Hermes offers Odysseus Molly as protection against Circe’s potent potion. Described as having black roots and milky flowers, Molina Venegas and colleague Rodrigo Verano suggest that Molly may correspond with the sea daffodil (Pancratium spp.), which could inhibit the effects of henbane and mandrake.
Color Perception
19th-century British Prime Minister William Gladstone observed that Homer’s color palette was limited, mostly featuring whites and blacks, with sporadic mentions of purple and red. He criticized Homer’s depictions of a “purple” rainbow and a “wine-like” sea, theorizing that ancient Greeks perhaps had a different visual perception than modern humans. An article published in Nature in 1886 discussed how Homer focused on the brightness of objects instead of their colors.
Contrary to interpretations of a lack of color perception, scholar Mark Bradley from the University of Nottingham asserts that the Greeks had a unique approach to visual categorization, intertwining color with tactile and sensory experiences, a concept not understood until Isaac Newton established the scientific basis of color as linked to light wavelengths.
