Although the August 12 solar eclipse may appear relatively modest from the United States, it will be impossible to observe safely without the proper eye protection. Anyone viewing the eclipse’s partial phases MUST wear certified solar eclipse glasses or use solar binoculars designed specifically for solar observation.
The American Astronomical Society explains that “ISO 12312-2 specifies the properties that a solar viewer should have in order to protect your eyes from injury and provide a comfortable view.”
With the solar eclipse approaching, there is still time to buy certified solar viewing equipment. However, some retailers are already running low on stock, and certain products may not arrive before Wednesday, August 12.
