The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, will provide stunning deep panoramic views of the universe. It aims to generate unprecedented imagery that will transform our comprehension of cosmic structures. This observatory is set to initiate a groundbreaking chapter in space exploration by uncovering a wealth of celestial phenomena and illuminating profound cosmic enigmas, such as dark matter and energy. Roman will also employ state-of-the-art technology, including advanced imaging capabilities to discover planets around nearby stars, critical for NASA’s quest for extraterrestrial life.
Managed at NASA Goddard, the Roman Telescope project collaborates with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, Caltech/IPAC in Pasadena, and the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, involving a diverse array of scientists from various institutions. Key industry partners include BAE Systems Inc., L3Harris Technologies, and Teledyne Scientific & Imaging. The project has also received contributions from the European Space Agency (ESA), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the French space agency CNES (National Center for Spatial Research), and Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Astronomy.
