Imagine stepping into a machine that feels like a spaceship, next-generation air taxi or lunar lander—all without leaving the ground. NASA’s Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS), the largest flight simulator of its kind in the world, delivers that experience. Following major technology upgrades, the simulator is now more powerful, realistic and capable than ever.
Located at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley, the NASA Vertical Motion Simulator has supported aviation and spaceflight research since 1979. Its platform can move 60 feet vertically and 40 feet horizontally, allowing pilots, engineers and researchers to experience highly realistic aircraft motion. The simulator can accurately replicate vehicles ranging from helicopters and advanced air taxis to spacecraft and lunar landers.
The latest Vertical Motion Simulator upgrades replace legacy analog systems with advanced digital technology. A new dome surrounds the simulator’s cockpit, while an upgraded 4K projection system delivers near-20/20 visual clarity. These improvements provide pilots with sharper images, a wider field of view and a more realistic view of the environment outside the cockpit.
“The new dome configuration and improved systems can support much more aggressive mission tasks while providing a more realistic working environment for pilots and crew,” said Diana Acosta, director of NASA Ames’ Aerospace Simulation Research and Development Division. “This enhances how teams coordinate, respond and manage difficult scenarios, which is exactly the preparation needed for the next mission.”
The upgraded system can also automatically align and color-match visual images so they blend seamlessly into a simulated background. In the past, completing this process manually could take several hours or even days. Automation now helps researchers prepare realistic simulation environments much faster.
Previously, switching the simulator from a lunar module configuration to an air taxi required replacing the entire cab—a large, heavy structure that was difficult and time-consuming to move. The upgraded simulator uses lightweight, removable inserts containing the controls, seats and instrument panels needed for each vehicle. This new approach reduces physical labor and cuts configuration time by approximately half.
NASA’s Vertical Motion Simulator upgrades will help engineers and pilots test the next generation of aircraft and spacecraft before they take flight. By improving training, vehicle design and mission readiness, the simulator is helping advance safer skies, more efficient air travel and future human missions to the Moon and Mars.
