Finnish Study Finds Link Between Screen Time and Cognitive Processing in Adolescents
A Finnish study has identified an unexpected association between screen time during childhood and stronger cognitive processing in adolescence. Researchers found that children who spent more time using screens as they grew older tended to perform better on measures of cognitive processing during their teenage years.
However, the researchers caution that the findings do not mean all screen time is beneficial. Instead, they suggest that the type of digital activity may be important. Screen use that encourages active thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and learning could have different effects from passive entertainment.
Petri Gialanko, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Jyväskylä, said the findings challenge the idea that screen time is always harmful. He emphasized the importance of finding a healthy balance between physical activity and screen-based activities that support cognitive development.
Why Physical Activity and Screen Time Matter for Brain Development
Low levels of physical activity among adolescents remain a major public health concern. Sedentary behavior has been associated with poorer academic performance, while physical activity is widely recognized as beneficial for brain health and cognitive function, particularly in adults.
Despite this, less is known about how physical activity, sedentary behavior, and screen use during childhood and adolescence relate to cognitive processing later in the teenage years.
Childhood and adolescence are important stages of brain development. Experiences and behaviors during these years can influence cognitive abilities into adulthood, potentially affecting educational achievement and future professional opportunities.
Researchers Examine Screen Use, Exercise, and Cognitive Performance
The Finnish research team examined how physical activity, sedentary behavior, and screen time from childhood through adolescence were associated with cognitive processing in teenagers. The researchers also analyzed whether the results differed between girls and boys and whether the intensity or type of physical activity influenced the outcomes.
Screen Time Was Associated With Better Cognitive Processing
The study found that greater screen time from early childhood was associated with better cognitive processing during adolescence. The findings do not prove that screen use directly improves cognition, but they indicate that screen-based activities may play a more complex role in child and adolescent development than previously thought.
According to Gialanko, the key issue may be how children use digital devices. Educational programs, creative software, interactive games, and activities that require decision-making or problem-solving may encourage active mental engagement.
“Our findings suggest that screen time can support cognitive processing in children and adolescents. Perhaps the important point here is what they do with their screen time. Teachers and parents should encourage children to use devices and screens in ways that promote active thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and learning.”
This may help explain why screen time was linked to cognitive performance in the study. Digital activities that require concentration, learning, creativity, and problem-solving are likely to differ substantially from passive viewing.
“Rather than viewing screen time as simply harmful, we should seek a balance between screen time and physical activity that promotes positive thinking,” Gialanko said.
Physical Activity Had Different Effects in Girls and Boys
The relationship between physical activity and cognitive performance was more complex than the relationship observed for screen time.
Among girls, higher levels of light-intensity physical activity during early childhood were associated with better working memory in adolescence. Among boys, greater participation in supervised physical activity during childhood and adolescence was associated with stronger working memory.
The researchers also identified unexpected associations involving unsupervised exercise. Lower levels of self-reported unsupervised physical activity were linked to better cognitive processing among adolescents.
In contrast, physical activity and sedentary time measured with devices that tracked heart rate and movement were not associated with cognitive processing. The researchers noted that these devices can measure movement and physiological activity but cannot reliably determine what a person is doing while active or inactive.
“Our study shows that the relationship between physical activity and sedentary behavior and cognitive processing is complex and depends on gender, the type and assessment method of physical activity, and sedentary time. Furthermore, from a brain health perspective, boys and girls may benefit from different types of physical activity,” Gialanko said.
Study Does Not Prove That Screen Time Causes Better Cognition
The researchers stress that the study demonstrates associations rather than cause-and-effect relationships. The findings do not prove that increased screen time directly improves cognitive performance or that specific types of exercise cause changes in working memory.
More intervention studies are needed to determine whether particular forms of screen use or physical activity directly influence cognitive development. Future research should also examine how exercise intensity affects changes in cognitive processing and why associations may differ between girls and boys.
Details of the Finnish Child Development Study
The findings were based on an eight-year follow-up of the PANIC Study, which examines physical activity and nutrition in children. The analysis included 124 girls and 136 boys with an average age of 15.8 years.
Researchers assessed physical activity and sedentary behavior using questionnaires and a device that combined heart-rate and movement measurements. Learning, attention, and working memory were evaluated with the CogState test battery.
The study was published in the journal Pediatric Exercise Science.
What Parents and Teachers Can Take From the Findings
The results suggest that screen time should not necessarily be treated as harmful in every situation. Parents and teachers may benefit from focusing on the quality and purpose of screen use, while also encouraging regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and healthy daily routines.
Interactive learning, creative projects, educational games, and problem-solving activities may provide more cognitive engagement than passive screen consumption. At the same time, the researchers emphasize that more evidence is needed before firm recommendations can be made about screen time and adolescent cognitive development.
