Soccer is a high-impact sport, and players can experience hundreds of collisions and head impacts throughout their careers. While some incidents may appear minor at the time, repeated blows to the head can increase the risk of concussion and raise concerns about long-term brain health.
These concerns have received renewed attention following recent research into chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. One study estimated that at least 25% of deceased NFL players examined had evidence of CTE, a progressive brain disease associated with repeated head impacts. However, this finding does not mean that 25% of current NFL players have CTE. Instead, it adds to the growing evidence that repeated head impacts may have serious consequences.
The NFL has introduced measures designed to reduce concussion risks, including stricter concussion protocols, improved player education and investments in protective equipment such as the Guardian Cap. But are these steps enough to protect athletes from the long-term effects of repeated head impacts?
