The blood-brain barrier is one of the greatest challenges in modern medicine. This highly selective protective layer separates the brain from the bloodstream, allowing essential nutrients to pass through while blocking many harmful toxins and pathogens. Although small, simple compounds such as paracetamol can cross the blood-brain barrier, larger molecules—including proteins and messenger RNA—are generally unable to penetrate it. While this defense system protects the brain from potentially damaging substances, it can also make it difficult to deliver treatments for serious neurological diseases and other conditions affecting this delicate organ.
