There is, however, an important pricing detail to consider: The 2024 Mac Mini M4 originally started at $599. Apple later raised its hardware prices across the board, citing chip and memory shortages, bringing the M4’s price to $799. The current $649 deal is still a discount, but it is higher than the computer’s original launch price.

The Mac Mini M4 Is Still a Capable Desktop

The Mac Mini M4 is no longer Apple’s most powerful small computer; that title belongs to the M6 and M5 Pro models. Even so, the M4 remains a powerful and efficient processor. Its compact design and strong performance also helped make the Mac Mini a popular, affordable option for running agent AI locally.

For demanding workloads such as local AI processing or video editing, 16 GB of memory may not be enough. One person who purchased a Mac Mini for AI tasks used a 32-GB configuration. For most users, though, the base model should be more than capable for everyday computing.

The M6 system on a chip offers more CPU and GPU cores, neural accelerators, and higher memory bandwidth. It is the better choice if you need maximum performance for intensive AI, creative, or video-editing workloads.

For web browsing and general productivity, the performance difference may be less noticeable. The Mac Mini M4 should be sufficient for most day-to-day tasks, and at $649, it is unlikely you’ll find a better small desktop computer at this price.
