Apple’s AirPods 5 bring active noise cancellation (ANC) to both models, making noise canceling available without paying for the more expensive version. Starting at $129, the lineup also supports Apple’s Siri features, speech recognition, live translation, and spatial audio. The semi-open earbuds deliver surprisingly effective ANC and natural transparency mode, although their fit is less secure than the silicone-tipped AirPods Pro 3.
AirPods 5 improve noise cancellation
AirPods 5 have impressive ANC for semi-open earphones. Apple says a redesigned multiport acoustic architecture and improved audio processing allow them to filter out up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. I can’t confirm that percentage, but the improvement was noticeable during testing.
On domestic flights in particular, the AirPods 5 did a good job of reducing airplane engine noise. The cabin does not disappear completely, and the AirPods Pro 3 still provide stronger sound isolation, but the improvement over the AirPods 4 with ANC was significant.
Transparency mode sounds natural, especially when used with adaptive audio. This feature automatically adjusts the balance between ANC and transparency mode according to your surroundings. While running, for example, the sound of footsteps approaching from behind prompted the earbuds to lower the music and allow more ambient sound through.
The transitions were smooth enough that most outside noises blended into the music. I could stay aware of my surroundings without being distracted by every small sound around me.
For people who run outdoors or commute to work, the AirPods 5 may be more appealing than the AirPods Pro 3’s more sealed design. You sacrifice some isolation, but the semi-open fit makes it easier to remain naturally aware of what is happening around you.

These improvements cannot overcome the fact that I generally prefer the AirPods Pro 3’s silicone tips to the AirPods 5’s semi-open fit. The AirPods Pro 3 create a snug seal without feeling stuffy, and their interchangeable sizes allow users to adjust the fit.
The seal also makes a noticeable difference during workouts. During long runs, the AirPods 5 can begin to slip as sweat builds up, while the AirPods Pro 3 remained secure. A more stable fit also naturally improves noise cancellation.
