Why the GTA Series Is One of the Biggest Entertainment Franchises Ever
The Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series is one of the biggest and most profitable entertainment properties of all time.
GTA 5’s Record-Breaking Success
GTA 5 has sold nearly 230 million copies, making it one of the best-selling games ever and generating billions of dollars in revenue for Rockstar Games.
The game’s sandbox gameplay gives players the freedom to explore a vast open world in ways that can be controversial. It has also been widely praised as a powerful example of what interactive media can achieve.
How GTA Changed Open-World Gaming
Freelance video game journalist Vic Hood said each installment in the series “continues to push the boundaries of technical and gameplay,” while GTA Online helped establish the live-service model as it is known today.
She also described the game as “very culturally relevant.”
“Rockstar has always been on top of trends in music, entertainment, society, politics, celebrities and online culture, and has never shied away from satirizing these in the GTA game,” she said.
British games entrepreneur Sir Ian Livingstone told the BBC’s Today programme that the series, originally developed in Scotland, was “greater than any movie or song” and an “incredible achievement in interactive software.”
Why GTA 6 Has Generated So Much Hype
Speculation about how the sixth game can surpass the huge success of its predecessor means that every new update, no matter how small, is met with enormous hype and excitement.
The two GTA 6 gameplay trailers released so far have amassed approximately 447 million views combined, highlighting the extraordinary level of interest in Rockstar’s next Grand Theft Auto game.
