Shane Kimbrough, a NASA astronaut onboard the International Space Station, cast his ballot in the recent presidential election. This was confirmed by NASA’s official Tumblr.
In a statement to Yahoo News, NASA reported that Kimbrough submitted his 2016 election ballot from space within the past few days.
For astronauts in space during Election Day, the voting process initiates a year prior to their launch. This allows them to choose which elections they want to engage in.
Six months before the election, astronauts receive a form titled “Voter Registration and Absentee Ballot Request – Federal Postcard Application”.
NASA astronaut David Wolf made history as the first American to vote in space during a local election in 1997 while aboard Russia’s Mir space station. This was reported by NPR.
