Eyelash Trimming for Men: The Rising Trend That’s Confusing Ophthalmologists

Wondering, “Should I trim my eyelashes?” This may sound like a quirky question, but it actually highlights a peculiar social media trend.

Reports from various countries indicate that some men are cutting their eyelashes. They believe this enhances their masculinity.

While long, fluttering eyelashes are often linked to femininity, some alpha males feel compelled to alter their appearance to assert their masculinity, sharing their results on social media.

Did you know? The average person has approximately 90 to 160 eyelashes on the upper eyelid and 75 to 80 on the lower eyelid. – Image courtesy of Getty Images

From a medical standpoint, both my eye doctor and I find this trend perplexing. Trimming eyelashes typically involves scissors or clippers dangerously close to the eyeballs.

Watching these videos can be quite unsettling, with many suggesting that the trend is more about generating outrage than actual behavior.

Experts warn that a single misstep can lead to serious damage to the cornea or the tear film, which is essential for lubricating the delicate tissues beneath.

Even with steady hands, this method exposes your eyes to unnecessary risks. Eyelashes play a crucial role in protecting our eyes.

They are our last line of defense against dust, sand, and harmful UV rays. This protective feature is found in many warm-blooded animals.

In humans, the length and thickness of eyelashes are determined by genetic factors, rather than gender. The assumption that women have longer eyelashes while men have shorter ones is a cultural myth, not a scientific fact.

Trimming your eyelashes will only lead to dry eyes, discomfort, a higher risk of infection, and likely some social ridicule.
