NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has traveled nearly 1 million miles and is now three months into its journey toward its final orbit. The powerful space observatory launched at 7:26 a.m. ET on August 30 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Once operational, Roman will help uncover some of the universe’s greatest mysteries.
Designed to survey vast regions of space with a wide field of view and sharp infrared vision, the Roman Space Telescope will investigate how the universe has evolved over time. NASA’s flagship mission will give astronomers new insight into dark matter, dark energy, galaxy formation, and planets beyond our solar system, known as exoplanets.
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is the fourth major NASA mission launched on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. Earlier this year, NASA’s Launch Services Program partnered with SpaceX to advance the launch schedule after the space telescope was completed ahead of expectations.
