Over the years, Pokémon GO has occasionally succumbed to its own hype and global fascination.
Law enforcement and safety organizations have consistently cautioned players against becoming overly fixated on capturing the next Psyduck, as this obsession can lead to dangerous situations or getting lost.
Reynolds noted that the game’s immense popularity has resulted in “pervasive” connectivity issues, with servers experiencing overload at times.
While the pandemic was a boost for many video games, Steranka observed that the early strict lockdown “affected Pokémon GO more significantly than any other game.”
The game quickly regained momentum as lockdown restrictions were lifted, with players seeking engaging reasons to venture outdoors.
In 2025, Scopely—backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund—acquired developer Niantic for $3.5 billion (£2.7 billion), fueling speculation about the future of gaming.
Steranka shares his optimism: “My hope is that, over time, we demonstrate to players that this acquisition is beneficial for both the game and the community.”
Looking ahead, Steranka emphasizes that the core focus will remain on fostering community, creating memories, and enhancing experiences that families can share through Pokémon GO.
“No matter where I am or what phase of life I’m in, Pokémon GO has always been a constant for me,” he states.
“We connect with players at every stage of their lives, meeting them where they are.”
