Father and Son Make History by Winning World Sheepdog Trials Titles Together

David Howells and his 19-year-old son, Jack, have become the first father-and-son team to win both World Sheepdog Trials titles at the same event.

The farmers from Saimaa, Neath Port Talbot, competed at the World Sheepdog Trials in Scotland last weekend, where they achieved an unprecedented double victory.

David Howells Wins World Sheepdog Trials Title

David won the world title with his border collie, Wyvern Pip, competing against around 300 handlers from 34 countries.

His son Jack won the young handler world title with his dog, Sidros Voss.

David said he never expected to win the competition.

“My mood has turned upside down. I wasn’t expecting to win. I can’t believe it, to be honest.”

Speaking on BBC Radio Wales, David described winning the titles and holding the trophy with his son as a “crazy” experience.

This is the first time a father and son have won both titles at the same World Sheepdog Trials.

A Family Passion for Sheepdogs

David and Jack both live and work on their family farm, where they care for sheep and rely on sheepdogs every day.

“We both live on a farm, and it’s a hill farm with lots of sheep, so we need a sheepdog for daily work,” David said.

“And we all face challenges. It’s special to be able to do a job you love and have a hobby at the same time.”

David said he was proud that Jack had followed in his footsteps.

“He grew up on a farm and started raising sheepdogs when he was about 10 years old.

“During the pandemic, he wasn’t in school, but because he was at home, he was more involved. He was catching bugs and was furious with the sheepdog.”
