A rare Neanderthal rock crystal scraper discovered in a French cave helped change scientific views of our ancient relatives. Found a century ago, the tool was among seven quartz artifacts that demonstrated Neanderthals were skilled toolmakers rather than the unintelligent “brutes” many scientists once imagined.
The transparent, yellow-tinged scraper was unearthed in 1924 at Abri des Merveilles, an archaeological site in France’s Dordogne region. The excavation was led by George MacCurdy of the American School of Prehistoric Research, now affiliated with Harvard University. Today, the unusual tool is preserved in France’s National Archaeological Museum.
Neanderthals usually made stone tools from flint or chert because these materials fracture predictably, producing sharp cutting edges. However, a small number of Neanderthal sites across Europe have yielded tools made from microcrystalline quartz, commonly called rock crystal. These artifacts include remarkably clear scrapers and pointed tools.

MacCurdy’s April 1931 excavation report identified this as the first rock crystal tool discovered at Abri des Merveilles. Its unusual color and transparency may have made it suitable for use as both a scraper and a point. The excavation also uncovered six additional quartz tools and numerous tiny crystal flakes, suggesting the artifacts were manufactured inside the cave.
The raw quartz may have been transported downstream from the headwaters of the Vézère River, a tributary of the Dordogne that flows near the site. Although Abri des Merveilles has not been precisely dated, the cave’s rock crystal tools were probably made between 45,000 and 80,000 years ago. This estimate is based on the site’s geological layers, tool styles and the discovery of a Neanderthal molar.
The discovery was especially important because it showed that Neanderthals, rather than modern humans (Homo sapiens), were the earliest known toolmakers to use rock crystal in this innovative way. The finding challenged assumptions about Neanderthal intelligence, creativity and technical ability.
In the early 20th century, many experts still viewed Neanderthals as ape-like and unintelligent. This misconception was influenced by paleoanthropologist Marcellin Boule’s 1909 analysis of an older Neanderthal skeleton from La Chapelle-aux-Saints in France. Because the individual had severe osteoarthritis, Boule incorrectly portrayed Neanderthals as stooped, knuckle-dragging cavemen. That image persisted for decades, despite growing evidence of Neanderthal culture and intelligence.
MacCurdy interpreted the crystal tools as evidence that Neanderthals may also have appreciated beauty. At the time, archaeologists had not yet identified much of the evidence now associated with Neanderthal creativity, including rock art, carved objects, engravings and the use of pigments.

“We are accustomed to think of Neandertal man as devoid of the artistic sense,” MacCurdy wrote in the journal PNAS in November 1931. However, he argued that Neanderthals demonstrated “an eye for beauty of form and color” through their selective use of rock crystal.
The National Archaeological Museum featured the artifact as its Object of the Month in September 2025. Although MacCurdy’s interpretation reflected the scientific knowledge of his era, his discovery helped advance modern understanding of Neanderthals as resourceful, adaptable and culturally complex extinct relatives of modern humans.
