Trump Administration Places Americans in Congo on ‘No-Fly’ List, Prevents Return Trips

The Trump administration has implemented a ban preventing U.S. citizens from the Democratic Republic of Congo from returning home, as the Ebola outbreak continues to escalate. This crucial action aims to curb the rapid spread of the virus amidst inadequate response efforts.

Reuters first reported late Monday that Americans currently in or recently traveling from Ebola-affected areas have been added to the “no-fly” list. These individuals must remain in a third country for 21 days before being allowed to return to the United States. This decision was made under Title 49 transportation authority and was confirmed independently by Politico on Tuesday.

Reports indicate that around 20 Americans scheduled to fly home on Tuesday were already impacted by these new regulations. It remains unclear if this order also extends to civil servants, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has approximately 20 employees currently in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This latest action adds to the already stringent and controversial travel restrictions enforced by the Trump administration to prevent further Ebola transmission. Health experts have criticized these measures, arguing they often backfire and create adverse effects. Such policies may hinder transparency regarding infectious disease outbreaks, negatively impact the economy, and foster stigma. Additionally, there are concerns that these restrictions could affect humanitarian aid workers.

Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever Threat

Ebola is not easily transmitted like respiratory viruses; it is primarily spread through contact with body fluids. Patients are becoming ill during active outbreaks or are succumbing to the disease. Ebola is often described as a disease of compassion, as it mainly spreads among caregivers, family members, and healthcare workers who have close contact with infected individuals at their most contagious stages. Therefore, it is not the type of disease one can easily contract, such as simply sitting next to someone coughing on a plane.
