SpaceX is betting heavily on the future of orbital data centers. It’s not just about rockets or spaceships.
The company envisions launching and maintaining a staggering 1 million satellites, designed to generate 120 GW to support frontier-class GPUs for data center applications.
Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, introduced plans for this extensive satellite constellation months ago. Recently, during a discussion with Ian Dahl, SpaceX’s satellite engineering director, details about each satellite’s range and capabilities emerged in a promotional video. The video revealed key specifications of the company’s first orbital data center iteration, named the AI1 satellite.
“There’s no magic required that isn’t already in existence,” Musk stated in the video while addressing the AI1 satellite’s development challenges. “Much of this technology has been built for the Starlink V3 satellites. Fundamentally, we don’t view this as a significant challenge.”
As discussed in Part 1 of this series, while the physics behind orbital data centers isn’t mythical, the economic factors involved are undeniably complex.
This topic has ignited considerable debate regarding the immediate viability of such technology, analyzing both its feasibility and the potential hype surrounding SpaceX’s publicly traded status.

Matt Desch, CEO of Iridium Communications and a seasoned expert in the satellite industry, shared his insights on the topic during a recent financial report call.
“This is currently a hotly debated area, largely due to the Starlink announcement and similar statements,” Desch commented. “It appears to be a problem that can have solutions in space, but significant technical challenges remain to be addressed.”
