French researchers unveil the key to the incredible variety of bird calls.
A dedicated research team conducted an extensive analysis of over 100,000 songbird melodies, uncovering that bird songs worldwide consist of eight fundamental sounds, referred to as “motifs.”
These motifs combine to form diverse bird calls globally, comprising three types of trills, three types of whistles, and a range of chaotic notes and harmonies.
Bird songs represent one of the most advanced forms of communication found in nature.
The vast diversity and intricate nature of these calls have intrigued biologists, yet their multitude has posed challenges for global research efforts.
“The diversity is immense. In regions like Asia, Africa, or the Amazon, you’ll encounter distinctly different songs,” stated lead researcher Quentin Bacré, a doctoral student at the University of Saint-Etienne.
In this groundbreaking study, Bacré and his team leveraged a global collection of bird calls contributed by thousands of volunteers, allowing them to analyze around 116,000 songs from over 3,000 bird species.
They examined the patterns of these songs, tracking their evolution over time. With the aid of AI technology, they compared thousands of melodies to uncover their common links.
The scientists concluded that their findings revealed “the simplicity beneath the astonishing diversity of bird calls.”
