A rapidly strengthening El Niño climate phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean is poised to become the strongest in at least 150 years, as highlighted by researchers at a recent press conference. If predictions hold true, the heat surge from El Niño combined with human-caused climate change could make 2027 the hottest year on record, triggering extreme weather events globally.

According to diverse climate model projections, this El Niño peak is expected to exceed previous records by an unexpectedly large margin. Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist at Berkeley Earth, stated that global temperatures could potentially increase by as much as 1.7 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, threatening to breach the 1.5°C limit set by the Paris Agreement.
The emergence of an El Niño event is typical, as the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) features natural fluctuations in sea surface temperatures and winds in the tropical Pacific. Historically, these fluctuations oscillate between hot El Niño and cooler La Niña phases every two to seven years. The last significant El Niño was noted in 2023-2024, with an alarming surge starting in June of this year.
However, the latest forecasts indicate this El Niño could be stronger than initially anticipated. Justin Mankin, a climate researcher at Dartmouth College, remarked that this phenomenon’s intensity aligns with predictions of exacerbation due to climate change later this century.
Extreme El Niño Forecast
Rising sea surface temperatures and wind patterns characteristic of El Niño have significantly intensified since June. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that this El Niño will likely persist until at least April 2027, with an 80% probability of a “very strong” episode occurring by year-end.
“All indicators of active air-ocean coupling over the equatorial Pacific are present, increasing our confidence in experiencing a historically strong El Niño,” noted NOAA meteorologist Michel La Roux, who leads the agency’s ENSO forecast team.
However, NOAA’s future projections may be conservative. In a recent blog post and during the briefing, Hausfather compared predictions from 14 climate models, revealing that the estimated maximum sea surface temperature in the Pacific is about 0.8 degrees Celsius higher than the prior record from 2015-2016. “While not a certainty, the possibility is growing each month,” he stated.

Hausfather indicated that the current El Niño could lead to unprecedented global temperature increases in 2027, potentially resulting in another record-setting warm year in 2026. Associated patterns of heat waves, droughts, floods, and wildfires may significantly impact the global economy. Past El Niño events, such as the one in 1997-1998, have been linked to $5.7 trillion reductions in global economic growth.
If these projections hold, the present El Niño could lead to economic losses of approximately $10 trillion by 2032. Beyond human society, this event may strain ecosystems and oceans, leading to decreased carbon absorption and adverse effects on heat-bleached coral reefs.
