Heavy rainfall in recent days has caused localized flash flooding across parts of the UK, but it has not been enough to ease the ongoing drought in England and Wales.
The National Drought Group announced on Thursday that it will meet weekly instead of monthly to coordinate the response to the continuing water shortage and drought conditions.
More than two-thirds of England, as well as all of Wales, remains affected by drought. Officials say the situation is still serious despite the recent rainfall.
A drought can only be officially declared over after reservoirs, rivers and groundwater supplies have recovered. Replenishing these water sources typically requires several months of sustained heavy rain.
The weather outlook for the coming weeks remains uncertain. Rain is expected to return next week, although further heatwaves could develop during September and prolong the drought risk.
