EU Digital Services Act: ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox Face Stricter Online Rules

OpenAI’s ChatGPT must comply with stricter European Union regulations, including requirements to address illegal content, the European Commission announced Monday. The decision comes as Brussels works to apply existing digital rules to rapidly evolving artificial intelligence services.

Under the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), the European Commission classified ChatGPT, social media platform Reddit, and gaming service Roblox as very large online platforms (VLOPs).

This designation subjects the services to additional obligations, including removing illegal content, increasing transparency, and protecting the privacy and safety of minors. Companies that fail to comply with the EU’s online safety regulations could face fines of up to 6 percent of their global annual revenue.
