Charity Thanks HMP La Moye Inmates for Helping Save Hedgehogs

Animal charity thanks prison inmate after hedgehog is saved using handmade wildlife shelter

Prisoners at HMP La Moye in St Brelade have helped protect local wildlife by donating 20 hedgehog feeders and nesting boxes to the Jersey Hedgehog Conservation Society. The shelters were made from recycled pallet wood.

Peter Gould, the prison’s vocational manager, said the project could help reduce reoffending by giving prisoners practical carpentry skills, improving their employment prospects and helping them make a positive contribution to the community.

Drew Vardon, from the Jersey Hedgehog Conservation Society, said the initiative supports both prisoner training and hedgehog conservation. “If it helps with carpentry skills training then that’s great, but these boxes are definitely saving hedgehogs’ lives,” he said.
