Apple has renamed Lake Ontario “Lake America” on its mapping service for users in the United States, following an order from US President Donald Trump amid rising trade tensions with Canada.
The name change currently appears only to users in the US, while Apple Maps users in Canada will continue to see the name Lake Ontario. The BBC has contacted Apple for comment.
Apple’s decision follows President Trump’s executive order calling for the lake to be renamed. The order came after trade negotiations between the United States and Canada broke down late last month, leading Washington to impose new 50% tariffs on $20 billion (£14.8 billion, C$28 billion) worth of Canadian goods.
Google introduced a similar name change for its US users in recent days, triggering widespread criticism and debate on social media.
In response to the new US tariffs, Canada has said it will impose dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on American goods.
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office previously withdrew from trade negotiations, citing what it described as unacceptable demands from Washington.
Secretary Carney criticized the US negotiating strategy, saying talks could resume if Washington begins taking the discussions “seriously.”
